Greta Van Fleet

Illustrator + Photoshop Event Poster

This event poster began as a UC Davis design project in which students were to create a cohesive digital illustration using both Illustrator and Photoshop software featuring text and at least two blended images that work together to communicate the poster subject to the target audience. Students were to use well-styled type, imagery, and possibly some of our own illustrations, which must all convey the essence of the event described. Finally, students were to bring together the combined aspects and learned skills of design that had been studied and practiced during this course to unify them in one meaningful, finished poster design.

This project was assigned to me right after the 2018 Paradise Fire has first sparked, so it was definitely at the forefront of my mind at the time which is why I decided to make a benefit poster centered around said disaster. I was also fully aware that one of my favorite bands, Greta Van Fleet, had an album titled “From the Fires” which I thought to be fitting for this project. I first began with in-depth research of both the Paradise Fire and band, looking closer at the overall aesthetic of GVF to consider how I would approach the design in a respectful and impactful manner. Then I moved on to a series of rough sketches that I began replicating on my Adobe programs. I went through many iterations before landing on the final result shown below, but I could not be happier with the combination of colors, gradients, typefaces, and imaginative imagery.

Even though this event poster was for a fake event, this project provided me with an excellent opportunity to practice both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop by using a wide range of tools on each software. My research and passion for my selected event aided in my creative process when deciding on the colors, images, and overall layout of the event poster. I believe that the result shows evidence of proficiency in a range of tools using both software and knowledge of aesthetic design.
