Univers
InDesign Layout Study
For this UC Davis design project, students were to create a series of text layouts based on a list of pre-established constraints that were different for each page in order to strengthen our layout and compositional design skills. We could only use the typeface Univers and no outside design elements, so working solely with text and white space proved to be a puzzle at times.
This project proved to be very difficult at times to not only make the hierarchical elements make sense on a small square, but also in making the composition visually pleasing and easy to understand and read. It took a lot of experimentation and visual strategy to perfect my layouts, and it was mindblowing to me how important the layout of text can be when all other visual elements were stripped away.
While this project challenged me at times, it also provided an excellent opportunity to practice my layout design skills in Adobe InDesign using the grid to aid in creating strong and structured compositions. My knowledge and confidence in design and typographical hierarchies were also strengthened after working on this project. Exploring different compositional layouts aided me in creating different hierarchies that all made sense in their own unique ways, and I believe that the final designs show evidence of a deep understanding of design hierarchy and layout structure.
Each layout came with it’s own unique constraints, and therefore it’s own unique challenges. Working around the different constraints was half the fun.
