Didot Italic
Illustrator Typeface Study
For this UC Davis design project, students were to create three compositions that would explore a typeface of our choosing as forms rather than as letters.
First, I researched the background and story behind the typeface. I chose to work with the Didot typeface in italic because it reminded me of the typefaces used in high fashion magazines that I was introduced to at a young age, so to me, Didot represents the elegance and sophistication I found within the glossy pages of magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, and so many others. Next was the fun part of picking apart each letter and highlighting each of the interesting features that make the letters unique from one another.
This project provided not only an opportunity to practice my layout and compositional skills in Adobe Illustrator but break down the Didot typeface in order to appreciate it for its letter’s individual and unique structures rather than viewing it as simply another alphabet. My skills in layering and positioning were also strengthened after working on this project. My research on the typeface aided my creative process as well and informed my design choices in which aspects I chose to highlight from this beautiful serif typeface.
