Open Ceilings Summer 2021: Waiting Room | Layout Director
January 2021 — May 2021
While most dream about being on the covers of magazines, I dream of designing them.
It was hard for me to find enough words to describe the emotions I was feeling after concluding the production process of Waiting Room and an entire year of designing for Open Ceilings. Luckily for me, I never had to reach for the right words—our contributors always had more than enough of those. All I had to do was make a magazine out of them.
SNOT! was the second cover art that I helped select, and also the second cover to feature colorful, beautifully deformed faces. While each of the artists had more personal themes they wanted to express when they were first constructing their pieces, little did they know how deeply an entire publication board would resonate with their feelings of discomfort and alienation in a world that had been uprooted right before our very eyes. Once again, the cover piece drove the color palette featured throughout the literary magazine.
And again, it was with honor and gratitude that I had the trust of each of the contributors to carefully handle their words and images of vulnerability that they had poured themselves into. I could not be more proud of the product that we have made together. Without them, I would just have had 200 blank pages.
