The Biology of Magazine Spreads
An Exploration of Layout Design
For this UC Davis English project, students were to analyze a genre of communication that interested them. I chose to dissect the visual communication of layout design.
By breaking down the concept of layout design into its barest of bones, I was able to explain how each part worked individually—such as the unique roles of the grid, typographical elements, visual hierarchy, graphics, and photographs that can often appear in magazines and other publication materials—and how they worked together as a whole.
This project allowed me to easily explain basic design to a class made up of students from a range of majors that did not necessarily have a background in design, thus strengthening my own understanding of these basic principles.
